Honey Blue

Since I enjoy working at a subconscious level (at least for parts of my process), I try to be open to anything as I evolve a piece. As I build digital patterns, I see images inside them, and when I tile them I see even more. This piece, “Honey Blue” was born from a portion of my pattern Winter Vine Starburst. It’s just one of the creatures and other forms I see within the image, but it’s the one I found the most interesting.

Since this piece was created from a physical painting, I keep the hard edges of the spiraled pieces in place as a nod to the original format. However, these edges are not particularly visible in this piece.

While the title suggests that the creatures are bees, I actually prefer to leave it up to interpretation. They could be insects, or lobsters, or space creatures. Or, you could focus on the larger shapes and see them as lacy bands or fancy columns, or a stack of amphora.

The background of this piece is Winter Vine Starburst (or, really, Angelic Dreams) with its colors shifted. See if you can spot these critters in the background’s shapes.

Sunset Bursts

I made this pattern, “Sunset Bursts,” by tiling my Sunset Dance pattern, which is a color alteration of my Ring of Angels piece. Ring of Angels was in turn made using a small piece of my Forest Spirit painting. It’s kind of like digitally remixing my own paintings.

Since this work was created from a physical painting, I keep the hard edges of the spiraled pieces in place as a nod to the original format.

Sunset Dance

This pattern, “Sunset Dance,” is a color alteration of Ring of Angels, which in turn was made from a piece of my Forest Spirit original painting. I’ve somewhat detailed the process of creating the pattern on the “Ring of Angels” page, and there’s more information in Creating Digital Color Variations and Creating Patterns. As is usual with my spirals, if you look closer you can see some hard lines where the squares I used to make the pattern overlap. It’s a nod to the original painting’s form.

My piece Honey Blue was built using this pattern. I cut out part of it and then used the pattern itself as a whole as well.

Spiral Snowflake

My pattern “Spiral Snowflake” is a color alteration of my Ascension piece, which was created using a small piece of my Forest Spirit painting. This section of painting is similar to that used in my Ring of Angels pattern, but is slightly different, which gives Spiral Snowflake a different feel. From there, I play with the digital file until I create something I’m happy with.

You can see the process I use by checking out Creating Patterns. Since this piece was created from a physical painting, I keep the hard edges of the spiraled pieces in place as a nod to the original format.

Tree of Life

I made this pattern, “Tree of Life,” by tiling my Nirvana pattern, which I made using a small piece of my Forest Spirit painting. I love the way that tiling a spiral pattern brings a whole new dimension to my work, creating new forms through the intersections and interplay.

Since this piece was created from a physical painting, I keep the hard edges of the spiraled pieces in place as a nod to the original format.
