Angelic Dreams

I made this pattern, “Angelic Dreams,” by tiling my Ring of Angels pattern, which I made using a small piece of my Forest Spirit painting. I love the way that tiling a spiral pattern brings a whole new dimension to my work, creating new forms through the intersections and interplay.

Since this piece was created from a physical painting, I keep the hard edges of the spiraled pieces in place as a nod to the original format.

Winter Vines

This pattern, “Winter Vines,” is a color alteration of Ring of Angels, which in turn was made from a piece of my Forest Spirit original painting. I’ve somewhat detailed the process of creating the pattern on the “Ring of Angels” page, and there’s more information in Creating Digital Color Variations and Creating Patterns. As is usual with my spirals, if you look closer you can see some hard lines where the squares I used to make the pattern overlap. It’s a nod to the original painting’s form.

I created a tiled version of this pattern as well: see Winter Vine Starburst.

Ascension Lord

Since I enjoy working at a subconscious level (at least for parts of my process), I try to be open to anything as I evolve a piece. As I build digital patterns, I see images inside them, and when I tile them I see even more. This piece, “Ascension Lord” was born from the center of my pattern Ascension Convergence. It’s just one of the beings and other forms I see within the image.

Since this piece was created from a physical painting, I keep the hard edges of the spiraled pieces in place as a nod to the original format. You probably won’t see them in the background, but if you look closely you might spot them in the being.

I won’t tell you exactly what I see here, as I’d love to know what you see without my influence. Look closely!

I use two different versions of this particular piece. One is as you see here, and the other has a darker background. The darker background is important when I create small repeating patterns of this being for a particular product design. Ascension

I made this pattern, “Ascension,” piece of my Forest Spirit painting. This section of painting is similar to that used in my Ring of Angels pattern, but is slightly different, which gives Ascension a different feel. From there, I play with the digital file until I create something I’m happy with.

You can see the process I use by checking out Creating Patterns. Since this piece was created from a physical painting, I keep the hard edges of the spiraled pieces in place as a nod to the original format.

Just as with all of my works I see images hidden in this piece. Look closely! I’ve also tiled this pattern to create Ascension Convergence.

Spiral Bouquet

This pattern was born from my painting Birth of Stars. As I tend to do with patterns, I started by choosing a small, square portion of the painting, as shown below:

If you’ve looked at my other works, you’ll notice that this is the same pattern I used for Kaleidescape. However, this time instead of laying it out in a linear fashion, I created a spiral:

As usual, I’ve left in the hard edges from the rectangular piece as a nod to the original format. I didn’t quite like that look, so from there I played with alterations until I chose this resulting image:

Ring of Angels

This pattern, “Ring of Angels,” was born from my painting Forest Spirit. I detailed the process in my post Creating Patterns but I’ll cover it here as well in a bit more detail. As I like to do with patterns, I started by choosing a small, square portion of the painting, as shown below:

From there, I created a spiral:

And from there, I played with the colors until I came to this:

Since this piece was created from a physical painting, I keep the hard edges of the spiraled pieces in place as a nod to the original format. So far this is my favorite pattern! As I stared at it, I kept seeing angels or birds, and decided that it was the angels I saw the strongest. Hence the name “Ring of Angels.” What do you see?

This is also the first pattern that I extended into a tiled version, which I call Angelic Dreams. I’ve also created color variations for this pattern: Spiral Snowflake, Winter Vines, and Sunset Dance.

Kaleidescape

This pattern, “Kaleidescape,” was born from my painting Birth of Stars. I detailed the process in my post Creating Patterns but I’ll cover it here as well in a bit more detail. I started by choosing a small, square portion of the painting. I then played with it to prepare it to be a seamless pattern, as shown below:

I made this square into a larger, seamless pattern like this:

Then I tiled it into a larger pattern:

Then since the expanded pattern felt too repetitive, I altered it to this:

Just as with all of my works I do see images hidden in this piece. Look closely!

Birth of Stars

When I first blew the ink for what became “Birth of Stars,” I again forced myself to sit with the results for a while. I’m trying to ensure that I don’t always run with the first idea that comes to mind. However, this haunting figure demanded my attention. I decided that I didn’t necessarily see this being as evil, which might be the natural assumption, and decided to portray it as something more magical. Whether I succeed or not is up to you!

What story do you see in the painting? I’d love to hear it.

Forest Spirit and Variants

“Forest Spirit” was my first painting using the technique of blowing ink. I let the initial ink painting sit for quite a while, looking at it from various angles, before deciding that I was reminded of a creature made of roots. That led to me using a forest theme, and I’m very pleased with the results.

What story do you see in each of these paintings? I’d love to hear them!

I also love Creating Digital Color Variations. I’ve found this process especially fun with Forest Spirit as a base, experimenting with elements and other concepts as I play with changing the colors while also retaining interest and depth. Below are the six variants I have so far.
